Why the Registered Aromatherapist® Designation Matters

A National Standard for Professional Aromatherapy

The Registered Aromatherapist® (RA®) designation is more than a title; it’s a mark of trusted education, ethical practice, and client safety. This certification indicates that an aromatherapist has completed approved training, adheres to professional guidelines, and is committed to responsible use of essential oils.

As a Canadian aromatherapy association, CAOA developed the RA® designation to support high standards across the profession and help the public identify certified, qualified practitioners.

What Sets a Registered Aromatherapist® Apart?

RA®s are certified professionals who meet the CAOA's rigorous standards, which align with those of other recognized professional aromatherapy organizations to ensure quality and competency. They stand out by committing to a level of professionalism and responsibility not required of unregulated practitioners or hobbyists.

Core Qualifications and Commitments

RA®s Have Verified Education

All RA®s have met the CAOA’s professional standards by completing a CAOA-recognized aromatherapy program, or a combination of education and training that demonstrates competence in the CAOA Core Curriculum; or holding an equivalent designation in good standing with a recognized Canadian or American aromatherapy association, and, where applicable, demonstrating their knowledge through a competency-based exam.

RA®s Follow a Code of Ethics

All RAs agree to CAOA’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, which prioritizes client safety and well-being, continued learning, and sustainability.

RA®s Commit to Ongoing Education

To maintain their designation, RA®s complete regular Continuing Education Credits (CECs) to stay current with best practices and evolving standards.

RA®s Help Protect the Public

By following established guidelines and rejecting unsafe or unproven practices, Registered Aromatherapists® help protect the integrity of aromatherapy and the safety of those who use it.

Who Benefits From A National Standard?

Clients Seeking Safe Aromatherapy

The RA® designation makes it easier to identify aromatherapists who are properly trained, accountable to a national standard, and focused on safety rather than sales. This transparency helps Canadians make informed decisions when seeking aromatherapy care.

Professionals Seeking Recognition

RA® certification provides professional credibility, a connection to a national community, and recognition of your commitment to ethical practice and continuing education. It also differentiates you from hobbyists and unregulated practitioners in an unlicensed field.

Why Certification Matters in Today’s Marketplace

The RA® designation helps clients and employers identify trained, credible aromatherapists in an unregulated and often confusing marketplace. It also helps distinguish certified professionals from hobbyists, multi-level marketing environments, and unsafe do-it-yourself essential oil practices.

Certification helps build trust in aromatherapy by demonstrating that safety, science, and ethics come first.
