Continuing Education (CECs)
Lifelong Learning for Registered Aromatherapists®
Achieving your Registered Aromatherapist® (RA®) designation is just the beginning. To maintain certification and stay aligned with CAOA’s aromatherapy certification requirements, every Registered Aromatherapist® must continue learning through Continuing Education Credits (CECs).
What Are Continuing Education Credits?
Continuing Education Credits help Registered Aromatherapists® maintain their certification, while also supporting Professional Aromatherapists and Associate Members in staying current with essential oil safety, research, and professional best practices. By completing approved courses, you expand your expertise while meeting renewal requirements.
CEC Requirements for CAOA Members
All active members must complete a minimum of 12 CEUs each renewal year. CEUs must be submitted within 21 days of your renewal date to allow for processing.
How CEUs Are Measured
CAOA-recognized workshops/courses: 1 CEU per 1 hour
Portfolio submissions or other approved activities: 1 CEU per 3 hours
Board service: 2 CEUs per year
Approved Competency Domains
To qualify, CEUs must align with one or more of the following areas:
Pharmacokinetics related to aromatherapy
Advanced chemistry of essential oils and other aromatics (CO₂ extracts, absolutes, hydrosols)
Aromatherapy for specific conditions (e.g., ADHD, menopause, chronic pain)
Research and literature reviews
Written book reviews on aromatherapy topics
Pre-approved webinars or workshops (no pre-approval needed for CFA, NAHA, or AIA events)
Developing and teaching aromatherapy courses or combined modality courses (e.g., reflexology)
Serving on the CAOA Board of Directors
Demonstrating Competency

Certificates of completion for recognized workshops or courses
A portfolio showing how activities meet competency criteria
Pre-approved custom activities (proposed to CAOA before starting)
What to Include in a Portfolio Submission
Portfolios should contain:
Member name and renewal year
Date of submission
Competency domain focus
List of activities with CEUs claimed
Total CEUs claimed
A signed declaration confirming accuracy
An example portfolio is available in the full CEU policy.
Can I Propose My Own Activity?
Yes. Members may propose a custom activity for pre-approval, allowing for flexibility in meeting competency requirements.
Approved Courses and Programs
CAOA regularly reviews and approves courses that meet our standards for Continuing Education Credits. These programs offer opportunities for Registered Aromatherapists® and other members to deepen their knowledge, refine their skills, and stay current with best practices in the profession.
You can also review Recognized Courses & Programs for information on foundational aromatherapy training.
Continued Learning Opportunities With CAOA
In addition to CEC-approved programs, members can earn credits by participating in CAOA-hosted workshops and webinars. These events provide opportunities to connect with peers, learn from experts, and strengthen your practice.

Common Questions About Continuing Education
How many CECs do I need to keep my RA® status?
To remain a Registered Aromatherapist®, you must complete 8 Direct and 4 Indirect CECs by your membership renewal date.
Can I take online courses for CECs?
Yes. Many approved programs, including the Essence of Thyme Certified Master Aromatherapist Program, are offered entirely online and meet all certification requirements.
Do all CEUs have to be directly related to aromatherapy?
Not necessarily. While most CEUs should focus on aromatherapy-specific competencies such as essential oil safety, chemistry, or clinical applications, some activities in complementary fields may also qualify if they support your professional growth. Examples include research methods, ethics, or teaching skills. These activities must align with one of CAOA’s approved competency domains and may require pre-approval.
Do non-approved courses count toward my CECs?
Only CAOA-approved programs and courses qualify for CECs. If you’re unsure about a course, contact CAOA to confirm eligibility.
Maintaining Excellence in Aromatherapy
By meeting your CEC requirements, you help strengthen the RA® designation, enhance your practice, and ensure client trust in safe and ethical aromatherapy.
We recommend reviewing our Professional Standards & Safety guidelines, which form the foundation of responsible and ethical aromatherapy practice.
